Technical Meet: "Recovery of the Lubricants from the Used Lube Oil" - Dec. 26, 2005

In continuation of our efforts to bring the latest developments / technologies in the field of Safety, Health, Environment and loss prevention, American Society of Safety Engineers, Kuwait Chapter organized its second Technical meet of this month on “RECOVERY OF THE LUBRICANTS FROM SPENT LUBE OIL” on 26th December ’05 at Hilton Hotel, Mangaf, for the benefits of the members, General Public & other HSE professionals around Kuwait. P

There were around 75 HSE professionals gathered in the hall that included 40 ASSE members. Mr. Fahad Al-Qattan, President, ASSE-Kuwait Chapter welcomed the gathering & introduced the presenter & the topic Mr. Abdullah Saleh Al-Nasser, Deputy Chairman & Managing Director, KUWAIT LUBE OIL COMPANY.

Mr. Jayakumar, then introduced the second presenter Mr. V. Ashok Kumar, Head Env & Occupational Health Forum. & the topic “ EPA Regulations related to Solid Waste Management ”. It was followed by the introduction of the Chief guest Mr. Ahmad Al-Shatti, Director, SMIC. The introductory session was followed the first presentation by Mr. V. Ashok Kumar.

In his presentation he briefed about the back ground of EPA & also briefed about Management of Household, hazardous waste, Management of Health care waste, Management of Sanitary Sludge, Management of Industrial Sludge, Protection of Earth Crust and Desert Areas and various appendix that was related to solid waste management.

The presentation of the evening was given by Mr. Abdullah Saleh Al-Nasser, Deputy Chairman & Managing Director, KUWAIT LUBE OIL COMPANY. He welcomed the gathering & thanked ASSE-Kuwait Chapter for giving an opportunity in organizing a technical meet on “RECOVERY OF THE LUBRICANTS FROM SPENT LUBE OIL”.

He started his presentation with an introduction about the Used Oil Management. He explained why Spent Lubricants are Hazardous ?. He then introduced the company (KLOC) & the various units functioning in it. In addition to that he explained about the preventive measures taken in the case of Fire & other accidents. Last but not least he informed about the Community Awareness steps taken by Kuwait Lube Oil Company. The presentation was followed by an interactive Q & A.

Mr. S. Jayakumar, Secretary, ASSE-KC thanked the presenters for their informative presentation. The technical sessions was followed by a recognition ceremony, Mr. Fahad Al-Qattan, President along with Mr. G. Ashok, Vice President handed over a Memento to Ahmad Al-Shatti, Director & to Dr. S. Madhava Rao, Consultant Physician, SMIC for Organizing a free training program to ASSE members on “FIRST AID & EMERGENCY CARE IN THE INDUSTRIAL SETTING ” from 12th – 16th Nov’05 at SMIC.

Dr. Ibrahim El-Mahdy, HSE Specialist, KOC, Mr. Barun Baruah, Senior Safety Engineer, KOC along with Mr. Ashraful Akhter, Head Govt Affairs Committee, ASSE-Kuwait Chapter handed over a memento to Mr. Abdullah Saleh Al-Nasser, Deputy Chairman & Managing Director, KUWAIT LUBE OIL COMPANY for his informative presentation. Finally a memento was handed over to M/s. KUWAIT LUBE OIL COMPANY for the support & sponsoring the technical meet. Mr. Elyas Ahmed Ali, Production Manager collected the memento on behalf of his company.

Mr. Ashraful Akhter, gave vote of thanks. He thanked KLOC for sponsoring the technical meet and in addition; thanked the participants in making the event a grand success.

The meet was concluded with a grand dinner sponsored by M/s. Kuwait Lube Oil Company, Kuwait.


ASSE-KC Holds "ASSE Pupil's HSE Week" December 10-14, 2005

The American Society Of Safety Engineers (ASSE) Kuwait’s Outreach Committee in line with this years strategic plans is once again observing "ASSE Pupil’s HSE Week" from 10th – 14th Dec’05 at various schools around Kuwait. As a part of this week, several competitions will be conducted for school children with themes focusing on safety, health and environmental issues. The inaugural ceremony was conducted on 10th Dec 2005. The Opening Ceremony was started with an inaugural address by Mr. Fahad Al-Qattan, President, ASSE-KC. It was followed by a welcome address by Mr. Anis Ahmed,the director India International School Mangaf. There after Ms. Vinita K. Sharma - Head, Outreach Committee,ASSE-KC spoke about the Objectives of "ASSE HSE Pupil’s Week". As a chief guest Mr. Jeff W. Johnson, Senior Environment Engineer,Joint Operations- Wafra welcomed the gathering & wished the participants good luck.

The ceremony was witnessed by 200 students & around 50 Teachers from all over Kuwait. The Pupils HSE Week’05, started off with the Poster Making & Slogan writing competition, where more than 40 students participated from different schools. All the children showed their talents on preparing a poster on the title "Renewable Sources of Energy". A slogan writing competition was held at the same time with the topic "good hygiene ensures good health". The judging panel comprised of Mr. Reghunathan, safety professional working as a Head, Safety Department HEISCO, Kuwait & Mr. V.S.V.R.A Babu Working as a Safety Engineer in Mina Abdullah Refinery(KNPC). The first day was concluded with refreshments for all the participants, school coordinators, volunteers & other students. The results of the poster making & slogan writing were declared on the second day.

The second day of the event was on (11th Dec’05) which was conducted at Integrated Indian School Jleeb-Alshyoukh. The event started with the Kuwait national anthem which was sung by the students of IIS, Jleeb. It was followed by a rhythmic welcome song by students of IIS, Jleeb. A welcome address was delivered by Mrs. Malhotra, Principal, IIS, Jleeb. The event was elocution competition on the topic "Stress Management at School". The children from 10 different schools delivered their speech in various styles, with full of innovative & informative thoughts. The competition was judged by ASSE-KC members who are safety professionals. The competition was tough and the participants delivered their best.

The program was witnessed by more than 300 students & around 50 Teachers around Kuwait. Mr. Rishi, A/Executive Chapter Operations, Delivered a vote of thanks where he thanked the judges(Mrs. Sansui Ajith & Ms. Seema Eapen) & IIS, Jleeb for the efforts & cooperation in organizing the elocution competition. He then announced the results for the first day & the second day events as follows

Poster Making Competition: Topic " RENEWABLE SOURCES OF ENERGY".

  • First place – Karen Philip, Fahaheel Al-Watanieh Indian, Pvt School
  • Second place – Audrey Arego, Carmel School
  • Third place- Adoline Eva D’Souza- Carmel School

Slogan writing Competition : Topic " GOOD HYGIENE ENSURES GOOD HEALTH". First Place – Livleen Jose, Gulf Indian School. Second Place - Joseph Alenchery, Fahaheel Al-Watanieh Indian, Pvt School.

Elocution : Topic " Stress Management at School "

  • First Place- Rubina Rachel Chandy, Indian Community Senior Girls School, Salmiya
  • Second place (1)- Archana Sunal, Fahaheel Al-Watanieh Indian, Pvt School
  • Second place (2)- Christina Goveas, Indian Community School, Khaitan
  • Third Place- Mitali Mayanak Baw, Indian Community Senior Girls, Salmiya.

The event concluded with light refreshments to all the school children, which was sponsored by American Society Of Safety Engineers-Kuwait Chapter.

ASSE-Pupils HSE Week’05 in its third day (12th Dec’05) where participants showed their acting talents in the One act Play Competition which was hosted by Indian Community School-Seniors Girls, Salmiyah.The day started on with the Kuwait National Anthem followed by the Indian National Anthem. Students of Indian Community School-Seniors Girls, Salmiyah, welcomed the crowd with a welcome song. The topic given was " Environmental Degradation". There were 7 different teams comprised more than 70 school children around Kuwait. The program was witnessed by around 300 school children. All the teams really gave a tough time for the judges with their innovative & informative thoughts, which they delivered in their shows.

Mr. Rishi, A/Executive Chapter Operations, announced the prizes as follows:

  • First Place – Fahaheel Al-Watanieh Indian Pvt. School
  • Second Place- Indian Central School, Jleeb Al-Shyuokh
  • Third Place- Integrated Indian School, Jleeb Al-Shyuokh.

He delivered a vote of thanks where he thanked the judges (Mr. Tareq Al-Aslawi, Senior Safety Engineer, NAPESCO & Mr. Naveen Dhananjayan, Manager, TRC) & Indian Community School-Seniors Girls, Salmiyah, for the efforts & cooperation in organizing the One Act Play competition.

He then invited the judges to hand over a memento to the sponsor M/s. Family Book Shop and Mr. Karan on behalf of his company received the memento.

Finally the day was concluded with a thanking note by Mr. Shyamal Dey,Principal,Indian Community School-Seniors Girls, Salmiyah & with light refreshments to all the participants & the audience.

ASSE-Pupils HSE Week’05 in its fourth day (13th Dec’05) where participants showed their acting talents in the Radio Talk Show which was hosted by Indian International School, Mangaf. The topic given was " Fuel Conservation". There were 8 different teams comprised more than 35 school children participated in the event. All the teams really gave a tough time for the judges with their different ideas & they gave delivered best out of them. Mr. Shiraz, one of the judges announced the winners of the day. Finally Mr. Rishi A/Exexutive Chapter Operations, delivered a vote of thanks in which he thanked all the judges & the IIS, Mangaf in organizing the show.The day was concluded with refreshments to all the participants & the audience.

ASSE-Pupils HSE Week’05 in its final day (14th Dec’05). It was a day of quiz. The event was hosted by DPS, Kuwait. There were 8 different school participated in this competition. The program was witnessed around more than 300 school children. The program started with a preliminary round where 3 out of 8 was selected. The final round was of mixture of Audio, visual, general & rapid fire rounds. At the end it was a nail biting finish, where DPS, Kuwait lifted the trophy for the quiz competition. The program concluded with vote of thanks by Rishi, A/Executive chapter Operations & with refreshments to all the participants and the audience.

Technical Meet: "IEC Standards 61508 & 61511" - December 7, 2005

In continuation of our efforts to bring the latest developments / technologies in the field of Safety, Health, Environment and loss prevention, American Society of Safety Engineers, Kuwait Chapter in association with ITT Communications Forums (Mass Consultants and Services) conducted a Technical Meet on “ IEC Standards 61508 & 61511” exclusively for ASSE members.

The program was conducted on 7th Dec’05 at Burgan Hall, Mass Consultants & services, East Ahmadi. The program was witnessed around 40 ASSE members. Saad Qulfat,Executive Manager, Operations, Mass Consultants and Services welcomed the gathering. He then introduced the presenter MA. Eng. Jerry Wyatt, Senior Training Manager - ITT & the topic IEC Standards 61508 & 61511.

The welcome address was then followed by the presentation of the evening by MA. Eng. Jerry Wyatt Senior Training Manager – ITT. He then delivered 3 hr comprehensive educational seminar which has been designed to provide an overview and fundamentals, and standards, to assist professionals in enhancing compliance within plant refinery and safety efforts.

He briefly explained the following topics :IEC introduction, Over view History Of IEC, Development of IEC Standards Fundamentals of IEC Standard 61508,Fundamentals of IEC Standard 61511,Procedures and Standards for compliance, Case studies of non compliance Review of Guidelines for Applications, Implementation Of Standards.

The presentation was followed by an interactive Q&A. Mr. Jayakumar, Secretary, ASSE-KC thanked the presenter for their informative presentation. He appreciated & thanked the management staffs of Mass Consultants and Services for their efforts & cooperation in organizing the technical meet. As a token of appreciation, Mr. Ujwal Ritwik, Member Advisory Committee, ASSE-Kuwait Chapter presented a memento to M/s Mass Consultants and Services.

The meet was concluded with photo session & refreshments sponsored by Mass Consultants and Services, Kuwait.


Technical Meet: "HSE Live System" - November 28, 2005

5 Day First Aid & Emergency Card in the Industrial Setting Training Program

Ramadan Kareem!!! Please be informed that Shuaiba Medical Industrial Center (SMIC) has planned to conduct a free 5 day training program on “FIRST AID & EMERGENCY CARD IN THE INDUSTRIAL SETTING. This program is being done exclusively for ASSE members. Following are the course details

ASSE-KC Conducts Coordinator's Meeting - October 27, 2005

American Society Of Safety Engineers-Kuwait Chapter conducted a coordinator’s meeting on 27th Oct’05 from 7:30 am to 8:30 am at Indian International School in connection with the ASSE- Pupils HSE Week’05. The meeting was witnessed by 20 teachers from different schools of Kuwait which included ASSE members. The meeting was arranged to discuss the various events that will be conducted during Pupils HSE Week’05 that has been planned in the mid of Dec’05. The meeting started by 7:40 am with an HSE Talk given by S. Jayakumar, Secretary ASSE-KC on the handling of LPG at kitchen. It was followed by an announcement from Vinita, Head Outreach Committee. She informed the teachers about the list of events that were identified called for a group discussion on the events. Coordinators poured in their thoughts & suggestions on the events. Over all the meeting was very interactive & successful.


Technical Meet: "Safety Regulations & Advances in H2S Safety" - Sept. 25, 2008

In continuation of our efforts to bring the latest developments / technologies in the field of Safety, Health, Environment and loss prevention, American Society of Safety Engineers, Kuwait Chapter organized its second Technical meet of this month on “Safety Regulations and advances in H2S Safety” on 25th September’05 at Hilton Hotel, Mangaf, for the benefits of the members, General Public & other HSE professionals around Kuwait. There were around 70 HSE professionals gathered in the hall that included 40 ASSE members. Mr. Ashraful Akter,Head Govt Affairs Committee welcomed the gathering & introduced the chief guest Mr. Willem Vollenbrock
Sr. HSE Specialist,Drilling & Exploration,E&PD,KOC & later on introduced the topic & the presenter Mr. Gary Hargrove,Operations Supervisor, American Safety Company, USA.

He invited Mr. Willem to deliver a welcome note to the gathering. Mr. Willem accepted the invitation & gave a short speech on H2S Safety in E&P industry. It was followed by the presentation of the evening by Mr. Gary Hargrove, He briefed about the U.S. Government Program that provide a nucleus for Safety in the work place. He informed that the subject is inline with the following regulations.

  • OSHA (OCCUPATIONAL SAFETY & HEALTH ADMINISTRATION)
  • ANSI (American National Standards Institute)
  • NIOSH (National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health)
  • H2S (Hydrogen Sulfide Gas )

He presented a slide show which covered the points that follows:

He also explained the various emergency procedures & finally the evacuation. The presentation was followed by an interactive Q&A. The second session was also given by Mr. Gary on Super Deep Drilling Rig with latest safety features. It was then followed by Q&A. Mr. S. Jayakumar, Secretary, ASSE-KC thanked Mr. Gary for his informative presentation and invited Mr. Tareq Al-Aslawi & G.Panda, Head, Training Committee who then presented a memento to Mr. Gary. A memento has been presented to Mr. Willem Vollenbrock, for his support in organizing the event. Finally a memento was given to M/s. Burgan Company,Kuwait(Sponsor’s of the event)for the support & sponsorship. Mr.Mustafa Ismail, Manager (KOC Operations),M/s Burgan Company received the memento on behalf of his company.

Finally the vote of thanks was given by Mr. Muthukumar, Head, Membership Committee, ASSE-KC. The meet was concluded with a dinner sponsored by M/s Burgan Company, Kuwait.


Technical Meet: "Office Ergonomics" - September 11, 2005

In continuation of our efforts to bring the latest developments / technologies in the field of Safety, Health, Environment and loss prevention, American Society of Safety Engineers, Kuwait Chapter organized a Technical meet on “Office Ergonomics” on 11th Septmebr’05 at Hilton Hotel, Mangaf,for the benefits of the members,General Public & other HSE professionals around Kuwait. The Meet was witnessed by 50 HSE professionals including non members. Mr. Rajeev L. Pandey member ASSE-KC welcomed the gathering & handed over the proceedings to Mr. Jayakumar, Secretary ASSE-KC. He In turn introduced the topic & the presenter Mr. David Broadie from The Ergonomics Center of North Carolina, North Carolina State University, USA.

Mr. David delivered a fascinating presentation which briefed about the benefits about the office ergonomics & the various research carried over in Ergonomics Center of North Carolina, North Carolina State University, USA. Following are the summary of his presentation.

  • Develop and maintain expertise
  • Address issues with multiple levels of controls
  • Develop partnerships to meet needs effectively

The presentation was followed by Q&A. Mr. Rajeev Pandey, member of ASSE-KC delivered a the second session of the evening. The presentation was on a latest software which can be used in office & house while working on a computer to create a safe working environment. He briefed about the importance of the software & mainly pointed out that it is useful for reducing health related stress while using the computers.
The presentation was followed by Q&A. It was then time for the award Ceremony. The party comprised Mr. Jayakumar, Dr.Ibrahim El-Mahdy,member ASSE & Mr. Reghunathan,Head, Student Chapter, ASSE-KC presented a memento to Mr. David Broadie for his valuable & informative presentation. Finally the vote of thanks was given by Mr. Jayakumar Aruldoss, Member ASSE. The meet was concluded with High tea


ASSE-KC Organizes Environmental Impact Assessement Training Course

ASSE-KC organized a Training Course on Environmental Impact Assessment between 27.08.05-29.08.05.


ASSE International Taskforce Meeting - August 10-12, 2005

American Society of Safety Engineers – Kuwait Chapter is the only umbrella in the State of Kuwait providing the latest updates in HSE field for its members and also involves in public awareness programs for students and general public. The Chapter was established in the year 2000 and it has become one of the leading international Chapters in the span of 5 years.

ASSE- Kuwait chapter presently having membership base of 160 HSE professionals. It also received the international recognition with an award from ASSE, USA during the year 2005 for increasing its membership base by 48%. The Board of Directors of ASSE, USA has constituted an International Taskforce from all leading international chapters to study and provide recommendations for better understanding the needs of ASSE international members. Mr.Garlapati Ashok, Vice President of Kuwait Chapter has been chosen to represent in this International Taskforce and will be proceeding for its meeting at New jersey, USA during August 10- 12, 2005. Mr.Jayakumar, Secretary and other Executive Committee members in its 62nd meeting held on 7th August 2005 wished him the best wishes and all success in achieving the Taskforce objectives.

Technical Meet: "Medic First Aid" - July 27, 2005

American Society of Safety Engineers, Kuwait Chapter organized a Technical meet on “Medic First Aid” why it is user friendly, and why first aid is a necessary skill not only for the workforce but also for the home and family environment on 27th July’05 at Hilton Hotel, Mangaf,for the benefits of the members. The function was attended by the ASSE members & other HSE Professionals. Ms. Vinita K.Sharma, Head Outreach Committee welcomed the members & introduced the topic & the presenter Mr. Mike Dunn, Manager Training Division, NAJMA, Human Resource Consultancy,Dubai.( Internationally qualified trainer and instructor for MEDIC First Aid, USA, and has the approval of the Dubai Ministry of Health)

Mr. Mike Dunn gave an one hour video presentation on the topic,In between the video he gave examples & explained the methods & precautions adopted during first Aid. The presentation was followed by an exciting Q&A. Jayakumar, Secretary thanked him a lot for the valuable & informative presentation. Mr. Dan Mangalam, Head of Outreach committee then took over the proceedings with his presentation on “Blood Donation” he briefly explained the types & importnance of blood donation. He then made the announcement for the forthcoming blood donation campaign that is scheduled on sep 1st’05. It was followed by the announcement of forthcoming training programs by Mr. Panda, Head Training Committee. It was then time for the felicitation party, Mr. G. Ashok, Vice President,ASSE-KC awarded a memento to Mr. Mike Dunn. Finally the vote of thanks was given by Mr. Rathish, Member of Outreach committee. The meet was concluded with High tea.


ASSE-KC Conducts Farewell Party for Mr. Inderjit Singh - July 25, 2005

American Society of Safety Engineers-Kuwait Chapter conducted a farewell party for Inderjit Singh, of Mushrif Trading & Contracting Co & member of ASSE since 1997. The party was held on July 21 at Hilton Resort, it started around 4:15pm with a welcome speech by Jayakumar, Secretary ASSE-KC.


General Body Meeting - June 26, 2005

American Society of Safety Engineers – Kuwait Chapter (ASSE-KC) has conducted its 5th Annual General Body meeting on 26th June’05 at Hilton Resort, Mangaf. Mr. Fadhel A. Al-Ali, Chairman gave a welcome address emphasizing that ASSE-KC is the only voluntary body in the State of Kuwait to address Health, safety and environmental issues and requested all members, new members in particular to
contribute for the Chapter growth. Mr. Fahad Al-Qattan, Vice President gave the opening remarks and shared his views and compliments he has received from ASSEUSA during his recent visit for the tremendous growth achieved by the Kuwait Chapter during the year. Subsequently Mr. Garlapati Ashok, Secretary, briefed in detail about the activities conducted by the Chapter which includes ten technical meets, one international HSE Professional Development Conference, three outreach programs and three HSE related training programs. Subsequently, various committee heads of the chapter briefed on the activities carried out by their respective committees.

ASSE-KC Training Committee Completes OHSAS 18001 Lead Auditor Course

Training Committee of ASSE-KC successfully completed the second batch of OHSAS 18001 lead auditor course from June 18- June 22, 2005. About 9 ASSE members and one Company nominee attended the course.

 

 

ASSE-KC Blood Donation Campaign

As part of a series of campaigns organized in Kuwait to provide sufficient storage of all types of blood and blood components that may be needed at all times, American Society of Safety Engineers-Kuwait Chapter, launched its first ever Blood Donation Campaign to help replenish supplies held for hospitals across the country on 1st of September at Central blood bank, Kuwait.

The campaign was in line with the strategic plans of ASSE's community out reach Program 2005-2006. ASSE-KC has conducted several community outreach programs that includes ASSE-HSE Pupils week, Beach Clean Up Campaigns etc.. in the recent pasts. The blood donation campaign Titled “Donate Blood Save Life ”, comprised around 60 people including non members featured young adults & middle aged people discussing the extreme lengths they have gone to try to make a difference in the world in an effort to show how donating blood is an easy way to positively and significantly make an impact. As we are aware that “Saving the world isn’t easy. Saving a life is. And just one pint of blood can save up to three lives.” In the opening remarks Jayakumar, Secretary ASSE-KC stated that “A safe blood supply is to have an extensive reserve, because this allows for the option of discarding any blood that is potentially unsafe. The assurance of an ample blood supply begins with the donation process”. He also explained the importance of blood donation & Campaigns like this. The Campaign started late in the afternoon by 3:30 PM & it continued till 6 :30 PM.

During the campaign Mr. Ashok Vice president, ASSE-KC who was donating blood said that “It's unbelievable how in 10 minutes, by sitting in a chair and filling a plastic bag with blood, you can save lives. " Each donors were given packets contained Fruits , refreshments etc.. after the completion of the donation.

Mr. Dan Mangalam, Outreach committee in his thanking note told that Blood donors, regardless of any blood type, A, B, O, AB, can be a match as a "Life Partner" in saving lives to patients in need of blood transfusion. He then gave away a thanking letter to all the donors, He thanked the blood bank for the excellent support & cooperation during the campaign. He also thanked Mr. Malik Aman, Safety Coordinator, Ahmadiah Construction Co for his initiative & efforts to mark this campaign a grant success. A memento has been awarded by Vinita K. Sharma, Head Outreach Committee to Ahmadiah Construction Co, Kuwait which in turn was collected by Mr. Malik Aman on the behalf of the company. Mr. Dan announced that ASSEKC has planned to organize a Garden Clean up Campaign in the mid of October’05. The Campaign concluded with Photo Sessions.


ASSE-KC Conducting 10 Hour Training Course on OSHA Exclusively for ASSE Members

Please be informed that American Society of Safety Engineers, Kuwait Chapter conducting its second batch of 10 Hrs training course on OSHA ‘Occupational Safety & Health Standard in General Industry’ exclusively for ASSE members. Following are the course details

  • Dates: 15th & 16th December’05
  • Time: 14:00 to 20:00 Hrs.
  • Maximum Seats available: 25
  • Course Fee: KD 10 should be paid on the first day of the training program towards the expenditures for preparing training manuals, courier charges etc..
  • As per the criteria set, Only Active ASSE membership holders are eligible for the program.

Program Content:

  • This is an OSHA type 10 hr. General Industry Occupational Safety & Health out reach training program. Around 18 sub-parts (of OSHA 29 CFR Part 1910 such as: Walking-Working Surfaces; Exit routes, Emergency Action-Fire prevention Plans; Powered Platforms, Man lifts and vehicle mounted work platforms; Occupational health & environmental control; Hazardous materials; PPE; Fire protection; Medical & first aid; General environment control; Welding cutting & brazing; Machinery and machine guarding; Hand and portable power tools; Toxic and hazardous substance; Electrical Safety, Recording and reporting and so on…… ) will be covered during the two-day course.

  • The objective of the course is to enhance understanding and individual skill of appropriate employee(s) and HSE professionals in occupational safety, health and work site environment. There will be a brief test at the commencement of the course and on the concluding day an objective type test will be taken, this is; to evaluate that what was the level of understanding the student had prior to attend the course and what level of understanding & skill the student achieved.

  • Those who succeed to obtain pass marks will be given a certificate indicating “successfully completed” in addition “an outreach 10 hr. student card” will be issued by OSHA, USA in recognition of their competency, which is internationally recognized and accepted. Those who do not succeed will receive only a certificate indicating “successfully attended”.

  • Upon diligently completion of the training course, each participant will also obtain a pocket ‘card’ issued by OSHA, USA, imprinted participant’s name, authenticating attendance of the course (the names of the confirmed participants shall be forwarded to undersigned minimum four (4) weeks prior to commencement of the training course).

OSHAS 18001:1999 Occupational Health & Safety Management Systems Lead Auditor Training Course

Technical Meet: "Behavior Based Performance Improvement" - April 17, 2005

American Society of Safety Engineers, Kuwait Chapter organized its monthly Technical meet on "Behavior Based Performance Improvement – An overview"" on 17th April at Hilton Hotel, Mangaf for the members and other interested HSE professionals around Kuwait. The presentation was done by Mr. Martin Peters MCIPD (Worked for Behavioural Science Technology International for roughly 4 years, implementing BSTs Behavioural Based Safety Process in various organisations and countries)

The Meet started on time and Mr. Garlapati Ashok, Secretary of ASSE-Kuwait Chapter, welcomed the presenter and members & gave a brief introduction on the topic & the presenter.

Mr. Martin started his presentation with a self introduction & moved to his presentation with the series of slides explaining the topic Behavior Based Performance Improvement – An overview" first he informed about the history of Behavioral Science Technology & the industries served by the system. He then explained the countries & the companies that implement this system. He then explained the primary Concepts of Behaviour-Based Safety

He then briefed about the importance of this system& how it works?. The presentation was concluded with a very lively session of questions and answers.

After the Q&A session Mr. G. Ashok, the Secretary of ASSE-KC, invited Mr. Tareq Al-Aslawi for the presentation ceremony. Mr. Tareq Al-Aslawi head of Publication Committee then Presented a Memento to Mr. Martin Peters. A Memento was also awarded by Mr. G.MuthuKumar, Head of Outreach Committee to Mr. G. Subrahmanyam, Head of Environmental & Occupational Health Forum for his services rendered to achieve the goals of ASSE-KC.

The presentation ceremony was followed by Mr. G. Panda who thanked Mr. Martin Peters for providing an excellent presentation.He extended his thanks to all the participants who witnessed the function. He then made announcement of the forthcoming training programs.

The event was concluded with a high tea for all the participants.


ASSE-KC Participates in PIC Safety Day 2005

PIC celebrated the Safety Day’05 at Shubaiba Refinery on 12th April 2005. The function started off at 10 PM with an introduction speech followed by a 2 hours session with a full length movie showing the importance of safety in the refinery, PIC’s Growth & its future business plan. This was followed by a speech by the chairman of PIC who thanked all the employees for achieving the targets goals. Then started the Award Ceremony where the deserving employees from all the departments were awarded with gifts. Simultaneously there were some Companies exhibited their products. There were around 150 employees witnessed the day. ASSE-KC used this opportunity to display promotional leaflets for general awareness of the society.

Technical Meet: "HSE Certification Courses/Creditial Programs" - March 20, 2005

American Society of Safety Engineers, Kuwait Chapter organized a Technical meet on "HSE Certification Courses/ Credential Programs" on 20th March 2005 at Hilton Hotel, Mangaf Exclusively for the members. There were around 50 Members witnessed the occasion. The meet kicked off at 7 pm & Mr. Garlapati Ashok, Secretary of ASSE-Kuwait Chapter, welcomed the presenters, members & introduced the presenters & the topics.

The first Presentation was given by Mr. Cyrus Rezaei,HSE Advisor of British Petroleum with a series of slides on how to obtain a National General Certificate in Occupational Safety & Health (NEBOSH). He then briefly explained the infrastructure & the contents of the course. It was followed by the second presentation on "How to achieve Associate Safety Professional (ASP)& Certified Safety Professional (CSP)certifications" which was given by Mr. Rajender Dahiya,head of Environment & Occupational Health Forum, ASSE-KC.He explained briefly about the contents of the courses.The third Presentation was given by Mr. Ujwal Ritwik, Head Advisory Board, ASSE-KC,on "CRSP & QEP" with his PowerPoint slides.The Fourth Presentation was given Mr. Uppara G. Saibaba, Treasurer, ASSE-KC on RSP. He circulated printed materials on the topic for better understanding about the RSP.Finally Came Dr. Tariq A. Aldowaisan, Head of Student Chapter,ASSE-KC with a presentation on "Guidelines & Selection criteria for identifying credible certification programs". It was followed by the Felicitation party which was lead by Mr. Fadhel Al Ali, Chairman ASSE-KC Who handed over a Memento to Mr. Cyrus Rezaei for his valuable presentation. He then awarded appreciation letters to other presenters. The award ceremony was followed by an announcement by Mr. G. Panda, Head of Training Committee, about the forthcoming training programs. Finally the time belonged to the vote of thanks & it was given Mr. Vasudevan,Head of Publication Committee, ASSE-KC. He thanked all the presenters for their valuable information & the time spent for the program. The meet was concluded with light refreshments.

Technical Meet: "Global Movement on Process Safety" - March 8, 2005

American Society of Safety Engineers, Kuwait Chapter organized an international Technical meet on "Global Movement on Process Safety after the Bhopal Tragedy" on 8th March’05 at Radisson SAS, Hotel, for the benefits of the members. The function was attended by the ASSE members & other HSE Professionals around Kuwait. The function kicked off at 19.00Hrs with a welcome address by Mr. G. Subrahmanyam, Head of Environment & Occupational health forum, ASSE-KC, he then introduced the presenter Professor J. P. Gupta(Department of Chemical Engineering, Indian Institute of Technology,Kanpur,India)& the topics.

Professor J.P Gupta then took over him & started his speech by appreciating ASSE-KC & its activities in the field of Health Safety & Environment. He started his presentation with a video clip that clearly displayed the cause of the Bhopal tragedy & the occurrence. It continued for about 20 minutes & then he moved on by presenting a series of slides on " Bhopal & the global Movement on process Safety". He then briefly explained the reasons & the after affect of the tragedy step by step. After series of explanation he concluded with three major points on the Bhopal tragedy:

  • Bhopal Gas tragedy was the worst industrial accident ever occurred.
  • Caused thousand’s of fatalities and many more life injuries with multigenerational mutations
  • Affected process industry image terribly.

This was followed by an open Q&A where members came up with their questions on safety measures that was in turn answered by Professor J.P Gupta. The function was more lightened when Professor J.P Gupta released the monthly newsletter of ASSE-KC. Then came Mr. G. Subrahmanyam for the announcement of chapter’s forthcoming events followed by that was a vote of thanks by Mr. T. Reghunathan, member of Training Committee,ASSE-KC. He thanked Professor J.P. Gupta for spending time with the members & for the invaluable presentation given by him also he thanked Dr. Salem Alhajraf,Associate Research Scientist, Environmental and Urban Development Division, Coastal and Air Pollution Department, Kuwait Institute for Scientific Research for his co-operation to organize this technical meet. The meet was concluded with light refreshments.

Student Committee Meets on March 1, 2005 at Kuwait University

A presentation was arranged by the Student Chapter of ASSE-Kuwait Chapter for the students of Kuwait University at the University campus on the 1st March 2005 at 12:30.

Dr. Tariq A Aldowaisan, Head of Student Chapter, introduced ASSE in general and welcomed the students who took the initiative to attend the presentation.

Mr. Fadhel Al Ali then gave an overview of ASSE activities and introduced Mr. Mitul Desai of the Environment Committee who was to give the main presentation.

Mr. Mitul Desai then gave a detailed presentation of ASSE activities on the whole and the history and involvement of the Kuwait Chapter. He then explained the need and use of creating a Student Chapter on its own and how the students will benefit from the membership of such a chapter.

This followed an active session of questions from the students.

The presentation was concluded by Dr. Tariq A Aldowaisan.

ASSE-KC Participates in Health Promotion at Workplace Conference

A conference on “Health Promotion at Workplace” was held at Hilton Resorts on 15th-17th January 2005 that by the Ministry of Health. Papers were presented by experts in the field of health and safety. Some topics covered were: health awareness in petrochemical facilities; smoke free work environment; health promotion in occupational health services; the role of technology in health promotion; health impact of physical activity; occupational rehabilitation; fighting stress at work; Job strain and cardiovascular diseases. Various case studies were also presented. There were workshops where delegates were made to take part in case studies’ based exercises.

ASSE-KC used this chance to display promotional leaflets for general awareness of the society.

Occupational Health & Safety Management Systems Auditor Conversion Training Course

ASSE, Kuwait chapter is planning to conduct the subject mentioned conversion course for auditors who are already qualified under any of the systems like ISO 9001 QMS or ISO 14001 EMS.

  • Eligibility: Certificate of previous Lead Auditor Qualification to be produced at the time of joining the course.
  • Conducted by: BVQI in association with ASSE
  • Duration of Course: Three (3) days (from 24th to 26th Feb 2005 - During the Public Holidays)
  • Location: HILTON, Mangaf
  • Course Fee: For current ASSE members - KD 100, For non-members - KD 200.

This Three – day course is intended for all those who will undertake audits of Occupational Health & Safety Management Systems. It is also useful for those interested in implementation of OH & SMS to OHSAS 18001 or other similar commercial or national standard.

How will delegates benefit from the course? On successfully completing the course, delegates will have::

  • An appreciation of the importance of controlling Health & Safety in all types of business
  • A basic knowledge of Health & Safety management system including requirements of BS 8800 & OHSAS 18001;
  • A basic knowledge of Health & Safety Legislation;
  • A knowledge of documented management system to control Health & Safety;

Prior knowledge requirements for delegates: Delegates are required to have completed either:

  • IRCA/ 145 or IRCA/ 2245 Auditor / Lead Auditor Training Course;
  • IRCA / 2017 EMS Auditor / Lead Auditor Training Course;
  • IRCA / 2001 Foundation Course on the ISO 9000 Series of standards; or a acceptable equivalent and IRCA/ 2002 auditing Skills course including the IRCA set examinations.
