Members of the Steering & Working Committee Meets at Hilton

American society of Safety Engineers-Kuwait Chapter proudly announces the 2nd ASSE GCC HSE Excellence Award 2010. The prime objective for this “Award Scheme “ is to encourage exceptional HSE performance in private sector companies in the Gulf Region. “ASSE GCC HSE Excellence Award” was introduced to recognize leadership, excellence in safe operations in private sector companies in the Gulf Region. This way we hope that the award program is the gateway to improve the corporate HSE performances of the private sector in the region.

The award was instituted by the American Society of Safety Engineers-Kuwait Chapter, a non-profit Organization in the year 2009. This evidence based award showcases successful business models from organizations that uphold HSE as a core business value and excel in their performances.

After the successful kick of meeting on 14th September 2009 at Kuwait Hilton Resort , the steering Committee formed a Working Committee to oversee the day to day activities. The second meeting was held on 10th November, 2009 at Hilton Resort. Mr. Ashok Garlapati, welcomed the working committee members and briefed on the award scheme. It was followed by a briefing on the various activities planned for the award program by Mr. Riaz, Head, Working Committee. The committee discussed on the panel members and decided to have Mr. Jim Moris, Vice President, Region VI, ASSE,USA and Mr. Jack, IPS, Administrator, ASSE, USA.

Technical Meet on Introduction to Safety Instrumented System

December 16, 2009 - American Society of Safety Engineers, Kuwait Chapter continued its professional journey by organizing a technical meet on 16th Dec’09 at Hilton Resort titled “Introduction to Safety Instrumented System”. Mr. Mohammad K S Mohiuddeen, Secretary, ASSE – Kuwait Chapter welcomed the participants and briefed about the significance of the technical meet. He introduced the speaker Mr. Clive Timms, Bsc., MPhil., CEng., MIET. Mr. Clive Timms is an expert International Functional Safety Engineer.

During his presentation Mr. Clive Timms gave a brief on the Introduction of SIS, Salient features of relevant IEC Standards, description of SIL Determination.

The informative technical session concluded with an interactive Question& Answer session. The technical meet was followed by few announcements made by Mr. Mohammad K.S Mohiuddeen, Secretary of the Chapter about forthcoming events. He specifically emphasized on the upcoming mega event ( 2ND ASSE GCC Excellence Award’10) and requested ASSE members to spread the message widely and make use of this opportunity.

As a token of appreciation Mr. Ravi Tammanur, Vice President, ASSE-Kuwait Chapter handed over a memento to the speaker. The Technical meet was concluded with vote of thanks by Mr. Subbarao Palagummi, Head, Env & Health Committee. Around 80 ASSE members & 20 HSE professionals from different companies attended this Technical meet. The technical meet was anchored by Mr. Srikanth, Head, Technical Events Committee.

Technical Meet on Essential Featured of a Good Process Safety/HSE Culture

December 8, 2009 - American Society of Safety Engineers, Kuwait Chapter continued its professional journey by organizing one more technical meet on 8th Dec’09 at Hilton Resort titled “Essential Features of a Good Process Safety /HSE Culture”.

Mr. ABS Srikanth, Head, Technical Events Committee welcomed the participants and briefed about the significance of the technical meet. Mr. Mohammad K S Mohiuddeen, Secretary of the chapter introduced the speaker Mr. Pronob Mukherjee, who is Regional Manager (Asia-Pacific), AICHE-CCPS; Mumbai, India. Mr. Mukherjee graduated in Chemical Engineering in 1978 from National Institute of Technology, Durgapur, India. Mr. Mukherjee had 26 years of rich experience in various fields such as Risk Analysis and HAZOP studies, inspection of Fire Protection Systems, Fire Protection, Safety Audits and Loss Control Trainings and Process Safety Management.

During his presentation Mr. Pronob Mukherjee briefed about the activities of CCPS, Safety Culture and its importance on Process Safety, Lessons learned from industry from studies on Process Safety and Culture and Specific examples of Process Safety/HSE Culture failure modes

The technical session was very much interactive and was followed by Question& Answer session. The technical meet was followed by few announcements made by Mr. Mohammad K.S Mohiuddeen, Secretary of the Chapter about forthcoming events. A technical meet was organized on 11 November at Hilton Resort titled “Quantitative Risk Assessment – A Path of Perception towards Perfection” around 100 ASSE member attended the event.

Mr. Subbarao Palagummi-Head Environment & Health Committee welcomed the participants and introduced the speaker J. Ramesh Babu who is a QRA specialist HAZOPer, and TUV Certified functional safety engineer.

Mr. Ramesh Babu briefed on the various aspects related to “QRA which is a sound based perception handles various complexities involved in the process and the effectiveness of the tool in the modern day context” . The technical session was very much interactive nad members have shared their experiences and clarified doubts during Question& Answer session.

Mr. Mohammed Shareef Riaz, briefed on the upcoming 2nd ASSE GCC HSE Excellence Award 2010 program and appealed members to spread the message to ensure all the contract companies get benefited.

ASSE Kuwait Chapter Participates in Kuwait Oil Contractors Conference

November 8-9, 2009 - Mr. Sami Al-Rushaid, Chairman & Managing Director, Kuwait Oil Company inaugurated the conference. Mr. Asaad Ahmad Al-Saad, Dy. Chairman, DMD, MAA Refinery, KNPC and Mr. Bassam Dahbar, Area manager, Combined Group Contracting Company were the speakers of the day.

The event was organized by SPATIAL. More than 200 delegates attended the event and they visited all the exposition stalls.

ASSE’s special thanks to the volunteers as there were no words to utter their efforts & dedication. They have done a splendid job by volunteering hours in the ASSE-Kuwait Chapter booth. The efforts of the volunteers had certainly taken our chapter a step closer to achieve our goal.

ASSE Kuwait Chapter Participates in KNPC Expo '09

November 4, 2009 - ASSE – Kuwait Chapter participated in annual celebration for honoring winners of the Refinery Trophy 2008-2009 at the Mina Abdullah KNPC Refinery on 4th November, 2009. The celebration was attended by Mr. Mohamed Ghazi Al-Mutairi, DMD MAB Refinery, Mr. Fahad Al-Daihany, Manager SHE, Mr. Hussain Al-Dabbous, Manager Engg & Maintenance Department, MR. Naser Al-Shammaa, Manager Tech Services Department, Mr. Hamad Jassem, TL, Safety & Fire as well as the honored employees and technicians working at MAB Refinery and staff of contractors, who has many activities during the celebration.

The party also witnessed a presentation of models by the participating local and foreign companies, clarifying the nature of the works which they carry out, in addition to presenting lot of products that are essential for any refinery.

Al-Mutairi thanked the honored employees and the attendants for the efforts they exerted, and referred to the great efforts they made after the electric power failure that happened last month. He also thanked the contractors for their cooperation to accomplish the assigned works.He also praised the efforts made by the oil sector officials to provide all the requirements needed for making the work plan a success and their interest in a free-accidents refinery. These efforts, he went on, resulted in enabling the refinery of receive the prestigious safety certificates. At the end of the celebration, all attendants were invited to a luncheon.

ASSE booth showcased the Chapter activities and the services provided to the ASSE members. There were other KNPC contractors & vendors participated in the Expo namely Reda chemicals, 3 B Genaral Trading & Contracting, Agility, Kharafi National, Ratqa, IMCO, Al Fulaij Refrigeration, Al – Magwa, O & G, Mustafa Karam & SONS, ALMEN & ISCO. The guests were fairly impressed by the Chapter activities and appreciated the efforts of our Society in taking up the HSE issues and awareness into the Public in Kuwait.

NEBOSH Certification Training Program

July 11-26, 2009 - Kuwait Chapter in association with IMEX International successfully organized the second batch of NEBOSH International Certificate in Occupational Health & Safety training program exclusively for ASSE members from 11th July – 26th July’09 at Kohinoor Human Resources Training centre, Fahaheel. The program was attended by 8 ASSE members. The program kicked off with a welcome note and introduction of faculty by Mr. Vasudevan, Head, Professional Development Committee, ASSE Kuwait Chapter. The training faculty Mr. Khalid Mahmood Khan is born and brought up in United Kingdom. He has 15 years experience in Health & Safety field. As a BSS consultant Khalid conducts routine inspections of a wide range of establishments ranging from small - medium sized businesses. Mr. Khalid conducts a wide range of risk assessments, including fire risk assessments for a blue chip retailer. Mr. Khalid conducts more than 10 different sessions of NEBOSH IGC in UK and in Kuwait .The ten day exhaustive training session was completed with a theory examination on 26th Jul 2009 at the same venue.

OSHA 30 Hours- Construction Industry Outreach Training Program

July 9-12, 2009 - American Society of Safety Engineers, Kuwait Chapter in association with IMEX International organized the four days training program on “OSHA 10 & 30 Hours- Construction Industry Outreach Training Program.” To have a better participation for the working professionals, the training program was conducted at Kohinoor Human Resources Training Centre. The program was attended by 14 ASSE members. The training sessions commenced with a welcome note by Mr. Vasudevan, Head, Professional Development Committee, ASSE Kuwait Chapter and introduced the trainer Mr. Muhammad Zahid Sarwar for the training program.

Mr. Zahid Sarwar has 15 years experience in Health, Safety and Environment field. He is a NEBOSH NGC qualified and currently working in an oil and gas company as Manager HSE. Mr. Zahid is authorized trainer for OSHA Construction Industry. The inaugural ceremony was followed by the training session. (The OSHA 30 Hour Construction Industry Outreach Training course is a comprehensive safety program designed for anyone involved in the construction industry. Specifically devised for safety directors, foremen, and field supervisors; the program provides complete information on OSHA compliance issues. OSHA recommends Outreach Training Programs as an orientation to occupational safety and health for workers covered by OSHA 29 CFR 1926. Construction workers must receive additional training, when required by OSHA standards, on specific hazards of the job)

First Aid Training Program

June 22-26, 2009 - Kuwait Chapter organized the five days training program titled “First Aid & Emergency Card in Industrial Setting”. The program was attended by 14 ASSE Members. The training program was conducted exclusively for ASSE members from 22nd – 26th March 2009 at Shuaiba Industrial Medical Centre, Kuwait. The training session commenced with a welcome note by Mr. Rishi Jayan, Executive Officer (Chapter Operations), and he introduced the training faculty. The first day session was delivered by Medical Professionals from MOH (Dr. Edi Dambo & Dr Salah Moussa). They briefly explained on Medical Emergencies, Work place hazards, Introduction to First Aid, Respiratory System, and Basic Life Support. The Second day session covered with topics on Accidents - Emergencies due to mechanical / Biological agents, Airway Mgt Checking, Correcting, Airway Obstruction, Pulmonary Resuscitation and CPR Theory by Dr. Mohammed Shebl. On the third and fourth day, Dr. Mohana Rao explained Emergencies due to chemical exposures, CPR Adult & Practical, CPR Child / Infant practical, Secondary Survey, Emergencies due to extremities of Environment, Recovery Position, Bleeding (Theory and practical), and Wounds (Theory and practical). The fifth day included Work related occupational disease by Dr. Mohammed Shebl and Emergency preparedness Occupational Health by Dr. Mohana Rao. The five day session included Practical exercises and group interaction. On the 5th day, The Knowledge and performance was made through a combination of continuous assessment and a written theory and practical examination. A certificate of competency will be issued to delegates deemed to have achieved a satisfactory standard and a License will be granted by Kuwait Ministry of Health to practice First Aid.

ASSE-Kuwait Chapter Commemorates World Environment Day

World Environment Day (WED) is the most important environmental event for the United Nations. It is celebrated on June 5 each year, in more than 100 countries around the world. WED was established in 1972 by the General Assembly of the United Nations, under the premise of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), whose headquarters are in Nairobi, Kenya. The main objective of World Environment Day is to draw the world’s attention towards the importance of the environment and arouse political action aimed at:

  • Giving a human face to environmental issues
  • Encouraging citizens to become active agents of sustainable and fair development.
  • Fostering associations to ensure that all peoples and nations enjoy a safer and more prosperous future.

The theme for WED 2009 is ‘Your Planet Needs You! UNite to Combat Climate Change’. The fundamental driver is Climate Change and Human Sustainable Development. The objective of this edition is to raise national and international awareness about climate change, as well as to spread Mexico’s message on the need to reach agreements at the Copenhagen Summit and, in general, green recovery worldwide. In connection with the WED 2009 agenda, American Society of Safety Engineers, Kuwait Chapter the premier Kuwait’s premier voluntary, non-profit making Health, Safety and Environmental organization, commemorated World Environment Day with a technical meet on 07.06.09 at Kuwait Hyatt Hotel. The event was attended by more than 100 participants which included ASSE members, and Govt officials. Mr. Fadhel Al Ali, Chairman – ASSE - KC welcomed the dignitaries & Others. Mr. Mohiuddeen , Secretary , ASSE Kuwait Chapter anchored the event , During his speech he proudly announced that it is the 8th consecutive year; the society is commemorating the World Environment Day (WED) . He introduced the speakers, Dr. Dhari Nasser Al Ajmi, Director, KISR & Mr. Mahmoud G. Abdullah, General Manager, QHSE, KOTC.

Mr. Ashok Kumar, Head, Environment & Health Committee, ASSE – KC Kuwait delivered an introductory presentation on significance of World Environment Day 2009. The key note presentation was delivered by Dr. Dhari Nasser Al Ajmi, Director, Environment & Urban Development Division, Kuwait Institute for Scientific Research. He appreciated the efforts & the activities of ASSE-Kuwait chapter in Environmental protection. His presentation featured various programs & activities that were carried at Environment & Urban Development ( EUD) division, KISR. He briefed on various topics such as EUD’s Rational, Mission, Program Elements, Committees, Constraints etc. It was followed by an interactive presentation by Mr. Mahmoud G. Abdullah, General Manager, QHSE, KOTC, During his presentation he briefed on the Environmental Protection Measurers initiated by KOTC. He covered topics like High profile marine accidents, Maritime Environmental Management etc.

The presentations were followed by an interactive Question & Answer Session. As part of Kuwait Chapter’s tradition to recognize the speakers, Mr. Tareq Al Aslawi, President, ASSE Kuwait Chapter handed over the memento’s to the speakers. The recognition ceremony was followed with a prize distribution, Where gifts were handed over to the winners of World Environment Day’09 QUIZ Competition organized by Env & Health Committee, ASSE – Kuwait Chapter.

As part of recognizing the outstanding outgoing member, Mr. Penkey Siva Prasad former Head , Occupational Health & Env Committee was awarded with a special memento for his outstanding voluntary services rendered towards the chapter activities for the year 2007 – 2009. Mr. Ashok Kumar in his vote of thanks extended his sincere thanks to the speakers, and members for attending in large numbers for the event. The event was concluded with a group photo session and dinner sponsored by ASSE – Kuwait Chapter.

 

 

Technical Meet on Innovative Environmental Technologies and Best Practices

April 23, 2009 - American Society of Safety Engineers, Kuwait Chapter added another feather to its knowledge cap. A technical meet was organized on 23rd April 2009 at Radisson SAS Hotel titled “Innovative Environmental Technologies and Best Practices”. As usual, the Technical meet was anchored by Mr. Mohammad K S Mohiuddeen, Secretary, ASSE Kuwait Chapter. The meet was kicked off with a welcome address by Mr. Ujwal Ritwik, Advisory committee member of the chapter.

Mr. Tareq Al Aslawi, President, of the chapter introduced the speaker Dr. Brent Nixon, who is Vice President of Science and Engineering at Environmental Chemical Corporation (“ECC”). He also serves as Executive Sponsor for all of ECC’s contracts supporting US Air Force clients in Kuwait, Iraq, Afghanistan, South Korea, Japan, Germany, the United Kingdom, and throughout the United States. Dr. Nixon’s other professional activities include service as a Board Member for the Institute of Professional Environmental Practice, including two terms as President.

During the Technical meet, Dr Brent briefed about various innovative techniques such as Direct and Indirect Thermal Desorption methods for Soil Remediation, Voluntary Protection Programs and Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) etc. The technical session was followed by questions and answer session, where members raised some important questions.

Vote of thanks was proposed by Mr. Rathish Thachanat, Treasurer, ASSE – Kuwait Chapter. The program was concluded with a high tea sponsored by ASSE – Kuwait Chapter.

OSHA 30 Hour (Additional 20 hr) - General Industry Outreach Training Program

April 10-11 & 17-18, 2009 - American Society of Safety Engineers, Kuwait Chapter organized the four days training program on “OSHA 30 Hour ( Additional 20 hrs) General Industry Outreach Training Program . ” To have a better participation for the working professionals, the training program was covered in two week ends (10 & 11 April’09 & 17 & 18th April’09) at Kohinoor Human Resources Training Centre. The training sessions commenced with a welcome note by Mr. M K S Mohiuddeen, Secretary, ASSE-KC and introduced the trainer Mr. Ashok Garlapati for the training program. Mr Ashok Garlapati is an OSHA authorized General Industry Outreach Trainer for 10 & 30 hrs. His academic qualifications are BE, MBA and PGD IPM. He is holding HSE Certifications of CSP, QEP and G-IOSH. He is also the Lead Auditor of the ISO14001 and OHSAS 18001 Standards. He has about 20 years of experience in HSE consultancy, implementation and management in the oil and gas industries. Mr. Ashok Garlapati is a Professional Member of ASSE and a Past President of ASSE-Kuwait Chapter. He is presently serving ASSE-International Practice Specialty as an A/Administrator and also the member of ASSE-KC Advisory Committee).

The inaugural ceremony was followed by the training session. The training covered OSHA 29 CFR Part 1910 Subparts such as: Welding & Cutting, Machine Guarding, Materials Handling and Storage, Means of Egress & Fire Protection, Hazard Communication, Introduction to Industrial Hygiene, Ergonomics , Walking & Working Surfaces – Fall Protection, Control of Hazardous Energy- Lockout/Tagout ,Waste Management, Treatment Hierarchy & Disposal Practices ,Blood borne Pathogens , Principles of HSE Performance Metrics, Incident Reporting & Investigation ISO 14001 & OHSAS 18001 ,HSE Certifications for Professional Development. The sessions also covered Safety Culture, Kuwait Traffic Regulations, Defensive Driving & Kuwait HSE Regulations. The training sessions were very interactive and the participants gained the knowledge and shared their experiences. The four day sessions included pre and post test. About 24 members attended this training program. First Aid Training Program

March 22-26, 2009 - Kuwait Chapter organized the five days training program titled “First Aid & Emergency Card in Industrial Setting”. The program was attended by 14 ASSE Members. The training program was conducted exclusively for ASSE members from 22nd – 26th March 2009 at Shuaiba Industrial Medical Centre, Kuwait. The training session commenced with a welcome note by Mr. Ravi Tammanur, Vice President, ASSE Kuwait Chapter and the Head Professional Development Committee introduced the training faculty. The first day session was delivered by Medical Professionals from MOH (Dr. Edi Dambo & Dr Salah Moussa). They briefly explained on Medical Emergencies, Work place hazards, Introduction to First Aid, Respiratory System, and Basic Life Support. The Second day session covered with topics on Accidents - Emergencies due to mechanical / Biological agents, Airway Mgt Checking, Correcting, Airway Obstruction, Pulmonary Resuscitation and CPR Theory by Dr. Mohammed Shebl. On the third and fourth day, Dr. Madhava Rao explained Emergencies due to chemical exposures, CPR Adult & Practical, CPR Child / Infant practical, Secondary Survey, Emergencies due to extremities of Environment, Recovery Position, Bleeding (Theory and practical), and Wounds (Theory and practical). The fifth day included Work related occupational disease by Dr. Mohammed Shebl and Emergency preparedness Occupational Health by Dr. Madhava Rao. The five day session included Practical exercises and group interaction. On the 5th day, The Knowledge and performance was made through a combination of continuous assessment and a written theory and practical examination. A certificate of competency will be issued to delegates deemed to have achieved a satisfactory standard and a License will be granted by Kuwait Ministry of Health to practice First Aid.

NEBOSH Certification Training Program

March 20, 2009 - Kuwait Chapter in association with Connaught Compliance Gulf Services successfully organized the first batch of NEBOSH International Certificate in Occupational Health & Safety training program exclusively for ASSE members from 18th Feb – 28th Feb’09 at Kohinoor Human Resources Training centre, Fahaheel. The program was attended by 20 ASSE members. The program kicked off with a welcome note and introduction of faculty by Mr. Vasudevan, Head, Professional Development Committee, ASSE Kuwait Chapter. The training faculty Mr. Ian (Ian is an Associate Health & Safety Consultant for Connaught, with extensive experience assisting clients from both public and private sectors with their training needs, He has experience in IOSH courses, tailored courses such as Senior Executive Briefings and NEBOSH courses including the NEBOSH Diploma. The ten day exhaustive training sessions were completed with a theory examination on 20th March 2009 at the same venue.

NAOSH Poster Contest 2009

March 19, 2009 - Immanuel Adriana Rakshana, Wins the Seventh Annual American Society Of Safety Engineers International ‘Safety On the Job’ Poster Contest.

Immanuel Adriana Rakshana, age 11, of Shuaiba, Kuwait recently won Third place in the seventh annual American Society of Safety Engineers (ASSE) kids’ ‘Safety-on-the-Job’ poster contest. Rakshana’s poster, titled ‘Climb the Ladder of Safety for Joyous Home coming every day,’ won third place in the age Group of 11-12 years for reflecting safety at work. For the second consecutive year she won the contest in her category. Two kids from the Kuwait submittals were recognized among the top submissions for their age group in this year’s Poster Contest.

The winning posters were selected from five age groups aged 5-14 and are featured on the North American Occupational Safety and Health Week (NAOSH) 2009 poster and distributed worldwide as part of NAOSH Week from May 3-9, 2009. Rakshana was honored on 19th March 09 during the concluding ceremony of 5th International Professional Development Conference at Radisson SAS Hotel.

Training Program on OHSAS 18001: 2007 Lead Auditor Course

February 28-March 1, 2009 - Kuwait Chapter in association with Bureau Veritas successfully organized OHSAS 18001 : 2007 Lead Auditor Training (two batches exclusively for ASSE members in the evening hours). The program was attended by 20 ASSE members. The first batch was conducted from 25th – 29th December 2008 and second batch from 25th Feb – 1st March 2009 at Hilton Resort. The sessions commenced with a welcome note and introduction of faculty by Secretary, ASSE Kuwait Chapter. The training faculty Mr. Shivkumar Iyer, BE (Metallurgy, is having around 15 years of work experience in steel manufacturing industry (QA + R & D) and around 3 years of experience with Bureau Veritas Certifications. He is currently working as a tutor Quality Management System (QMS), Occupational Health and Safety Management System (OHSAS), Environmental Management System (EMS) and Integrated Management System (IMS).

The topics covered in depth during this course are detailed content of BS88000 & OHSAS 18001, similarities with OHSAS 18001, ISO14001 & ISO 9000, H & S Management Issues including operational control, H & S Audit Skills. The five day extensive session included Practical exercises and group interaction. On the 5th day, the Knowledge and performance of the participants was evaluated through a combination of continuous assessment and a written examination at the end. A certificate of competency will be issued to delegates deemed to have achieved a satisfactory standard.

Training Program on Investigation on Chemical Process Accidents

January 26-28, 2009 - One of the challenges that the petroleum industry and the petrochemical industry faces is to continue efforts to improve Process Safety performance. In order to achieve our goal of an accident-free workplace, we need to eliminate not only the loss events themselves, but also the underlying conditions that create the potential for them to occur. Keeping this objective, ASSE – Kuwait Chapter with its joint venture endeavors with Chemical Process Safety (CCPS – American Institute of Chemical Engineers), USA for the first time in the Middle East organized a high value technical training program exclusively on Investigating Chemical Process Incidents from 26 -28 January, 2009 at Hilton Resort with renowned faculty from Chemical Process Safety (CCPS), USA. The program was well attended by the delegates from KNPC, KOC, KOTC.

Technical Meet on Incident Investigation

January 26, 2009 - In continuation of providing professional Development opportunity for ASSE members, ASSE – Kuwait Chapter organized a technical meet on “ Incident Investigation ” on 26th January 2009 at Hilton Resort. Around 120 members attended the meet. Mr. Mohiuddeen delivered the welcome speech and introduced the trainer Mr. Paul Butler, ( Mr. Paul Butler is the Senior Technical Manager of CCPS in the U.S.A He has more than 35 years of experience in the process industries, spending 18 years as Director of Process Safety for Buckman Laboratories, a global specialty chemical company. Throughout his career, Mr. Butler has offered many training courses in Incident Investigation, Hazard Analysis, and Process Safety Management Systems. Mr. Butler was a member of the CCPS Technical Steering Committee and chaired the CCPS Process Safety Incident Database project. Mr. Butler received a BSChE from Virginia Polytechnic University and an MBA from the University of Memphis). Mr. Paul briefly the basic elements of incident investigation. ASSE – KC recognized the tutor with a plaque.

Technical Meet on 5th Encyclopedia of Occupational Health & Safety

January 13, 2009 - Kuwait Chapter organized a technical meet on 5th Edition of Encyclopedia of OH&Safety” on 13th January 2009. The presentation was delivered by Ms. Ilise L. Feitshans JD and ScM Coordinator , 5th Edition , Encyclopedia of Occupational Health and Safety, SAFEWORK, ILO , Switzerland who was on a missionary trip to Kuwait. Her briefing was summarized below.

The meet concluded with a high tea sponsored by ASSE Kuwait Chapter.

Release of New Year Diary

January 13, 2009 - American Society of Safety Engineers, Kuwait Chapter released its second printed diary on 13th January 2009 SAS Radisson Hotel with a huge gathering of ASSE members. The diary was specially designed with useful HSE data. This Diary will be very usefull for all the HSE professionals in their day to day activities. Along with it the Wall Planner for the Year 2009 was also released. Later the Diary and Wall planners were distributed to all the members of the Chapter.

January 9-10, 2009 - American Society of Safety Engineers, Kuwait Chapter conducted the two days training program on “OSHA 10 Hour General Industry Outreach Training Program”. The Fourth batch was conducted on 9th & 10th Jan’09 at Kohinoor Hotel, Kuwait. The training sessions commenced with a welcome note by Mr. M K S Mohiuddeen, Secretary, American Society of Safety Engineers – Kuwait Chapter. Mr. N Vasudevan, Head, Professional Development Committee, ASSE – Kuwait Chapter introduced the trainer for the training program Mr. Ashok Garlapati ( He is an OSHA authorized General Industry Outreach Trainer for 10 & 30 hrs. His academic qualifications are BE, MBA and PGD IPM. He is holding HSE Certifications of CSP, QEP and G-IOSH. He is also the Lead Auditor of the ISO14001 and OHSAS 18001 Standards. He has about 20 years of experience in HSE consultancy, implementation and management in the oil and gas industries. Mr. Ashok Garlapati is a Professional Member of ASSE and a Past President of ASSE-Kuwait Chapter, which is the largest ASSE Chapter outside USA. He is presently serving ASSE-International Practice Specialty as an A/Administrator and also the member of ASSE-KC Advisory Committee).

The inaugural ceremony was followed by the training session by Mr. Ashok Garlapati. He covered OSHA 29 CFR Part 1910 Subparts such as: Walking-Working Surfaces; Exit routes, Emergency Action-Fire prevention Plans & Fire Protection; Electrical, PPE, Hazard Communication, Introduction to Industrial Hygiene, Occupational health & environmental control, and Safety & Health Programs etc.

ASSE Kuwait Chapter Participates at Kuwait Contractors Conference

November 4, 2008 - The inaugural ceremony of Kuwait Contractors Conference was conducted on 4th November 2008 at Hilton Resort under the patronage of Hon. Dr. Fadhil Safar, Minister of Public Works and Minister of State for Municipality Affairs, State of Kuwait. The inaugural ceremony comprised with speeches from Dr. Ameer Ali Al-Haddad, the conference chairman and other dignitaries. The exposition was formally inaugurated by the chief guests and other dignitaries. Several companies and organizations participated which includes Star Middle East, Environment Preservation Industrial Co, Al Watani Factory for Fiberglass Co., Al Hawra Kuwait Co., Mushrif Trading Co, Rays General Trading & Contracting Co, National Insurance Co and several oil sector companies participated in the Exposition.

ASSE-Kuwait chapter’s booth screened their activities and the services provided to the ASSE members. Mr. M K S Mohiuddeen, Secretary, ASSE-Kuwait chapter briefly explained about the activities to the chief guests & other dignitaries when they visited the booth.

The significant dignitaries visited our booth. Mr Mohiuddeen briefed them about the Society activities in improving the awareness of general public and school children. They were very much impressed with our Chapter activities and appreciated the efforts of our Society in taking the HSE issues into the Public.

Chapter Participation at KNPC, Mina Abdullah Refinery, SH&E Rolling Trophy Ceremony

November 3, 2008 - ASSE – Kuwait Chapter participated in annual celebration for honoring winners of the Refinery Trophy 2007-2008 at the Projects Camp, KNPC on 3rd November, 2008. The celebration was attended by Mr. Mohamed Ghazi Al-Mutairi, DMD MAB Refinery, Mr. Fahad Al-Daihany, Manager SHE, Mr. Hussain Al-Dabbous, Manager Engg & Maintenance Department, Mr. Naser Al-Shammaa, Manager Tech Services Department, Mr. Hamad Jassem, TL, Safety & Fire as well as the honored employees and technicians working at MAB Refinery and staffs of contractors. The purpose of SH&E rolling trophy was to recognize the staffs / contractors for their performance for the year which was categorized by their nature of fields they work.

The ceremony also witnessed a presentation of models by the participating local and foreign companies along with our ASSE Kuwait Chapter, clarifying the nature of the works which they carry out, in addition to presenting products that are essential for any industry and refinery.

ASSE booth showcased the Chapter activities and the services provided to the HSE Professionals & ASSE members in Kuwait. ASSE Volunteers actively participated in briefing the chapter activities to the visitors.

The guests were fairly impressed by the Chapter activities and shown keen interest in our chapter activities and appreciated the efforts of our Society in taking up the HSE issues and awareness into the Public in Kuwait.

October 10-11, 2008 - American Society of Safety Engineers, Kuwait Chapter conducted the two days training program on “OSHA 10 Hour General Industry Outreach Training Program”. The first batch was run on 10th & 11th October’08 and the second batch on 17th and 18th October, 2008 at Kohinoor Hotel, Kuwait. The training session commenced with a welcome note by Mr. M K S Mohiuddeen, Secretary, American Society of Safety Engineers – Kuwait Chapter. During his welcome address, Mr Mohiuddeen briefed about the demand and importance of the Training program and requested all the participants to make use of the program in the right spirit. Mr. N Vasudevan, Head, Professional Development Committee, ASSE – Kuwait Chapter introduced the trainer for the training program Mr. Ashok Garlapati , who is an OSHA authorized General Industry Outreach Trainer for 10 & 30 hrs. Mr Ashok has over 20 years experience in the HSE consultancy and HSE Management in Oily & Gas industry. He is an Engineer with MBA and holds the HSE certifications of CSP, QEP, G-IOSH, POSH, STM, Advanced Safety Certificate from National Safety Council (USA) and NEBOSH International Certificate in Health & Safety (UK). He is a Professional member of American Society of Safety Engineers (ASSE), IPEP (USA), IOSH (UK) and National Safety Council, India. Technical Meet "Safety Management in Nuclear Power Plants"

October 6, 2008 - American Society of Safety Engineers, Kuwait Chapter continued its professional journey in the field of Health, Safety Environment & Loss prevention by Organizing a most valuable technical seminar on ‘Safety Management in Nuclear Power Plants’ on 6th October 2008 at Radisson SAS. The program was well attended by over 85 members.

The Technical Meet was kicked off with the welcome speech by Mr. Mohammad K S Mohiuddeen, Secretary, ASSE- Kuwait Chapter. During his welcome speech he has informed the members that Nuclear Safety is going to take the lead role in the days to come as most of the countries are thinking of using Nuclear Energy as an alternate source of Energy. He requested all the members to make use of the information shared during the Technical meet. Mr. Vasudevan, Head Professional Development Committee, ASSE Kuwait Chapter introduced the Speaker of the event Mr. T V Sudhikumaran, Head, Industrial Safety and Fire, Nuclear Power Corporation, Mumbai, India.

Mr.T.V. Sudhikumaran is a Mechanical Engineering Graduate with post Diploma in Industrial safety from CLI. He is presently working with the Nuclear Power Corporation of India; a Government of India Enterprise engaged in the Construction, Operation of the Atomic Power Plants. He is in the profession of Industrial Safety for the past 35 years. He has also got an experience of more than 25 years in Fire Protection and in Managing Fire Services functions of a Nuclear Power Plant.

He is presently posted to the Head quarters of NPCIL at Mumbai as Additional Chief Engineer (Industrial and Fire Safety) and is responsible for overseeing the Industrial & Fire Safety of the whole of NPCIL Plants under Operation as well as in Construction.

During the technical presentation Mr. T V Sudhikumaran had briefly covered the topics on:

During the felicitation ceremony Mr. Tariq Al-Aslawi, President, ASSE – Kuwait Chapter thanked Mr. Sukumaran and presented a memento as a token of appreciation. The presentation ceremony was followed by announcements on the forthcoming events and activities.

ASSE-Kuwait Chapter Commemorates Ozone Day '08

September 16, 2008 - American Society of Safety Engineers, Kuwait Chapter continued its professional journey in the field of Health, Safety Environment & Loss prevention by commemorating International Day for the Preservation of Ozone Layer. This day (16th September'08) is being observed all over the world to emphasize the focus on signing of Montreal Protocol Treaty. This year’s theme of the International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer is “Montreal Protocol - Global partnership for global benefits”. In connection with the day, ASSE – Kuwait Chapter organized a Technical meet on tracking the progress of Ozone Layer Recovery "Montreal Protocol - Global partnership for global benefits” by Mr. Dhari Al-Gharabally, Team Leader, Health Environment Team, Corporate HSE Group, Kuwait Oil Company on 16th September 2008 at Radisson SAS. This was the seventh Consecutive year of Ozone day celebration in Kuwait Chapter’s History since its inception .The program was well attended by over 100 members.

The Technical Meet was kicked off with the introductory speech by Mr. Mohammad K S Mohiuddeen, Secretary, ASSE- Kuwait Chapter; He introduced the Speaker of the event (Mr. Dhari Al-Gharabally, Team Leader, Health Environment Team, Corporate HSE Group, Kuwait Oil Company,

Mr. Dhari Al-Gharabally graduated from Creighton University in Omaha, Nebraska (USA) in 1997 with a double major in Environmental Science and Atmospheric Science.

He has 11 years of experience in Oil & Gas Industry with the Kuwait Oil Company. He excelled in his duties and was given the opportunity to lead his team.

Some of the significant achievements of Mr. Dhari Al-Gharabally are:

  • Mr Dhari was associated with the issues of waste management and Soil remediation.

  • He is deeply involved with the management of a Project for the rehabilitation of damaged environment with the “Sustainable Economic Environmental Development” (SEED) Program.

  • He carried out Health Risk Assessment Associated with Environment Emissions from EOCENE crude.

  • Initiated Environmental Information Management Systems (EIMS) Project, to establish a baseline for all air emissions from company operations.

  • Member of the KOC Marine Colony (HE was awarded by the National Association of Underwater Instructors (NAUI) Organization, on October 11, 2007, in Florida, USA, for the work done to preserve and restore the KOC Marine Colony).

Presently, Mr. Al-Gharabally is working as Team Leader of Health & Environment Team in Corporate HSE Group of Kuwait Oil Company.

The introductory presentation was delivered on" Ozone Day & its significance “by Mr. V. Ashok Kumar, Head Environment & Health Committee, ASSE – Kuwait Chapter. The presentation covered about Ozone Day, Theme of the day, Its Significance, Depletion of Stratospheric O3, Ozone depleting chemicals and Benefits of Montreal Protocol etc.

During the technical presentation Mr Dhari Al-Gharabally had briefly covered the topics such as Ozone Layer Destruction, Basic facts about ozone, Health impacts of Ozone, gases that cause ozone loss, Formation of ozone hole, latest trends, Predictions - Where’s ozone headed and initiatives taken by Kuwait Oil Company to minimize Ozone depletion.

The technical meet was followed by an interactive Q&A Session where in members shared their information on Montréal protocol. During the felicitation ceremony Dr. Fatima Abdali, Senior HSE Specialist, KOC handed over a memento to Mr. Dhari Al-Gharabally as token of appreciation from ASSE for his valuable contribution. Mr. Rathish Thachanat, Treasurer, ASSE – Kuwait Chapter thanked all the guests and ASSE Members for their presence and active participation in the seminar. Corporate Social Responsibility Technical Seminar

August 19, 2008 - American Society of Safety Engineers, Kuwait Chapter continued its professional journey in the field of Health, Safety Environment & Loss prevention by Organizing a most valuable technical seminar on Corporate Social Responsibility on 19st August 2008 at Hilton Resort. The program witnessed by a record breaking audience of over 130 members. The Technical Meet was kicked off with the introductory speech of Mr. Mohammad K S Mohiuddeen, Secretary, ASSE- Kuwait Chapter, who anchored the program. While giving the brief about the topic Mr. Mohiuddeen introduced the Speakers of the event Mr. Mahmoud Al-Qattan, Vice President – Technical Services and Head of CSR Team, Equate & Mr. Ujwal Ritwik, Advisory Board Member of ASSE. After this, Mr. Fadhel A Al- Ali, Chairman, ASSE – Kuwait Chapter welcomed the members, Guests and other HSE Professionals who graced the occasion.

The introductory session was delivered by Mr. Ujwal Ritwik on “Corporate Social Responsibility” and it’s relevance to HSE Professionals.

The introductory session was followed by the interactive technical presentation delivered by Mr. Mahmoud Al-Qattan, Vice President – Technical Services and Head of CSR Team, Equate. Mr. Mahmoud Al-Qattan is responsible to oversee the development and use of Technical Services in the Information, Engineering, Construction, Corporate Communications, Materials Management and Procurement departments. He holds a B.S. degree in Chemical Engineering and has over 27 years of professional experience in Petrochemical industry.

Technical presentation covered the topics such as CSR Strategy; EQUATE Vision and Values, First CSR Award in Kuwait etc. It was followed by an interactive Q&A Session in which HSE professionals from different industries took part.

During recognition ceremony Mr. Fadhel Al Ali, Chairman, ASSE – Kuwait Chapter recognized EQUATE for Achieving 2008 Award in the field of Corporate Social Responsibility at Fifth Summit of CSR for Middle East, Dubai. On behalf of EQUATE, Mr. Mahmoud Al-Qattan received the Memento. Further to this, Mr. Tareq Al-Aslawi, President, ASSE-Kuwait Chapter handed over a special memento to Mr. Mahmoud Al-Qattan as token of appreciation from ASSE for his valuable contribution.

The presentation ceremony was followed by an announcement on the Chapter’s forthcoming mega event Professional Development Conference (PDC) to be conducted in March, 2009 in Kuwait. While announcing this forth coming PDC, Mr. Ujwal Ritwik, President, PDC-2009 and Advisory Board Member of ASSE requested all the Companies and HSE Professionals to participate in the Conference. ASSE-Kuwait Chapter's 8th Annual General Body Meeting

June 17, 2008 - American Society of Safety Engineers – Kuwait Chapter (ASSE-KC) has conducted its 8th Annual General Body meeting on 17th June’08 at Hilton Resort, Mangaf, which was well attended by its members. Mr. Fadhel A. Al-Ali, Chairman welcomed the members. In his speech emphasized that ASSE-KC is the only voluntary body in the State of Kuwait to address Health, Safety and Environmental issues and requested all the members in particular, to contribute for the Chapter growth. He also thanked the Committee Heads and other members who have contributed to the of the Chapter year during the year 2007 -2008.

Mr. Ashok Garlapati, President delivered a speech on “Chapter’s Role n Promoting HSE in Kuwait and the Global recognition and path forward ” He shared his views and the compliments received from ASSE-USA on Kuwait Chapter’s tremendous growth achieved by the Kuwait Chapter during the year. He briefed that about 4700 training man hours were spent on member's professional development during the year. In addition, about 2000 students and their families were given awareness programs on the importance of health, safety and environment.

Subsequently Mr. Ravi B Tammanur, Secretary, delivered a brief report on the Chapter activities conducted during the society year 2007 - 2008. He started off with the Key achievements of the Chapter and briefed about the programs that included Technical meets, Training programs, Outreach programs, Publication activities, Procedures designed, participation in Expo’s and other conferences, Honors and awards received by Kuwait chapter and other issues like record breaking membership gowth, membership fees reduction, release of first ever diary with useful HSE data, Newsletter and most import honor received Chapter Star Award of the year under Region VI. He concluded with a Challenging tasks for the incoming Executive committee to take up during their term 2008- 2009.

It was followed by the financial report which was delivered by Mr. Ravi on behalf of Mr. Fathi Badawi, Treasurer. Mr. Vasudevan shared his experience of his visit to the annual Safety Conference at Lasvegas, USA. He highlighted the discussion held with the concerned committee at ASSE- HQ and the issues raised during the meeting. To appreciate the outstanding efforts of the members who have contributed to the society Activities, Mr. Fadhel Ali handed over the memento’s & Certificates to Committee Heads and Other members. In order to encourage the members who have sponsored more number of New members which resulted in membership growth, A certificate of recognition was also handed over to the deserving members.

Mr.Tareq Al-Aslawi, Elect President in his vote of thanks, thanked the outgoing committee for their excellent services and the contribution and requested all the members to extend their generous support and co-operation for the new Committee. Technical Meet "Defensive Driving"

June 12, 2008 - American Society of Safety Engineers, Kuwait Chapter continued its professional journey in the field of Health, Safety Environment & Loss prevention by conducting a most valuable technical seminar on “Defensive Driving” on 12th June 2008 at Auditorium Hall inside Kuwait Society of Engineers Premises for the benefit of HSE Professionals and others. The program was well attended by 60 members including ASSE Members and other HSE Professionals.

The introductory session was delivered by Mr. Tareq Al Aslawi, Vice president, ASSE – Kuwait Chapter where in he emphasized the importance of the technical meet . It was followed by an interactive technical presentation delivered by Dr. Ibrahim El-Mahdy, HSE Specialist, Kuwait Oil Company, Production Development Support Group and ASSE Procedure committee head. Dr. Ibrahim showed a lot of traffic accidents and explained briefly the cause of these accidents then he explained Kuwait driving hazards and how the defensive driver can avoid accidents. At the end he showed an excellent defensive driving DVD which was designed and completed at KOC – PDS group 3 months ago and copies were distributed to all participants.

As a regular practice of recognizing the speakers, Mr. Tareq Al-Aslawi handed over a memento to Dr. Ibrahim El-Mahdy. The meet was concluded with a vote of thanks by Mr. Penkey Siva Prasad, Head Occupational & Environment Committee & a High tea sponsored by ASSE-Kuwait Chapter.

 

Technical Meet "How to Present a Technical Paper"

June 9, 2008 - The PDC’09 Organizing Committee of American Society of Safety Engineers, Kuwait Chapter inline with its conference planning activities had conducted a most important technical meet on “How to write and present a technical paper in a conference” on 9th June 2008 at Hilton Resort. The purpose of the technical meet was to demonstrate an approach to How to Write and Present a Technical Paper in a Conference. The objective of the technical meet was to encourage the ASSE members and other HSE professionals in and around Kuwait to participate effectively in conferences. The program was well attended by 50 participants including ASSE Members and other HSE Professionals. The introductory session was delivered by Mr. Penkey Siva Prasad, Head, Env Committee & OH forum. It was followed by the interactive technical presentation delivered by Mr. Deven Kotecha, KNPC. He had briefly covered the following topics.

  • DRY RUN or PRACTICE SESSION
