World Environment Day 2008 Announcement

World Environment Day, commemorated each year on 5 June, is one of the principal vehicles through which the United Nations stimulates worldwide awareness of the environment and enhances political attention and action.

The World Environment Day theme selected for 2008 is related to the C02 emissions; "CO2: Kick the Habit! Towards a Low Carbon Economy". Recognizing that climate change is becoming the defining issue of our era, UNEP is asking countries, companies and communities to focus on greenhouse gas emissions and how to reduce them. The World Environment Day will highlight resources and initiatives that promote low carbon economies and life-styles, such as improved energy efficiency, alternative energy sources, forest conservation and eco-friendly consumption.

The World Environment Day's agenda is to give a human face to environmental issues; empower people to become active agents of sustainable and equitable development; promote an understanding that communities are pivotal to changing attitudes towards environmental issues; and advocate partnership, which will ensure all nations and peoples enjoy a safer and more prosperous future.

World Environment Day is a people's event with colorful activities such as street rallies, bicycle parades, green concerts, essays and poster competitions in schools, tree planting, as well as recycling and clean-up campaigns.

ASSE International Membership Fee Reduction

This is in continuation to mails from Ms Susan, Manager-Chapter Services, ASSE, HQ and our Secretary, Mr. Ravi Tammanur (see below) on the restructuring of membership structure for international ASSE members.

I would like to further clarify on the new process. Please note that as per the new structure (please go through the attachment),all countries have been categorized as three Groups based on the World Bank Criteria. Members from Group I Countries (developed) will continue to pay US120/-. Members from Group II countries will be charged US$90/- and members from Group III Countries (India, Egypt, Bangladesh, Pakistan etc) will be paid US$60/-. If members from Group III countries are working in Group II countries, they will be charged for the Group III (US 60$) country charges,, if their employment / salaries are based on their citizenship. In this regard, a declaration has to be made by individual members in the new application form, which will be in force from April 1, 2008. This is applicable to renewal of all existing members as well.

The new structure has become a reality with the continuous follow-up with ASSE-HQ by international ASSE Chapters / Sections since the year 2005 through a Global Task force. Kuwait Chapter had played a very important role in this Task force.

In the recent past, we have been getting lot of calls from members about this new structure and we sincerely request you all to renew your membership and pass on this benefit of being an ASSE member to all your colleagues and HSE professionals.

With best regards,

Ashok Garlapati, QEP,T-IOSH,ASP
President, ASSE-Kuwait Chapter

New Features on ASSE Website

As of this week, the security protocols for ASSE Officer Central have been changed. Please be advised that all members of ASSE will now be able to access the materials located on Officer Central, with the continued exception of the chapter rosters. The security protocols for the rosters remain the same—only Chapter Presidents, Secretaries and Membership Chairs will be able to search and create a roster of their chapter from Officer Central.

This change has been made with the support of the Council on Member and Region Affairs for several reasons;

  1. To let ASSE members gain a clearer understanding of the connection between ASSE leadership and the mission and vision of the organization,

  2. To potentially offer a recruiting tool to Chapter officers to help them with their succession planning efforts and

  3. To allow members consistent and appropriate access to the governance documents and reporting records of their chapter.

This latest innovation to the ASSE website leads the way to some dramatic changes you will be seeing to Officer Central in the months ahead which are intended to make this site more user friendly, up to date and of greater value to our ASSE leadership.

Please contact Susan Lewis, ASSE Chapter/Student Services Manager with any questions.
