Mohammad K S Mohiuddeen honored with "ASSE's 2011 NAOSH Champion Award"

Every year ASSE members are being honored with “ASSE North American Occupational Safety and Health (NAOSH) Champion award” at its Annual Professional Development Conference for the significant contributions that are made to increase safety awareness within the society and the profession.

Due to the outstanding contribution made by ASSE Kuwait Chapter during the last three years, Mr. Mohammad K S Mohiuddeen, President of ASSE Kuwait Chapter has been selected this year by ASSE headquarters, USA for this prestigious award. Mr. Mohiuddeen was honored with “American Society of Safety Engineers 2011 NAOSH Champion Award” by Ms Terri Norris, CSP, ARM,  CPSI; President, ASSE USA during the House of Delegates Meeting on 12th June, 2011 in the Professional Development Conference in Chicago, Illinois, USA.

Mr. Mohiuddeen is associated with ASSE Kuwait Chapter for the last 5 years and served the chapter in different capacities, as Head of the Publication Committee, as Secretary for 2008/09 & 2009/10 and then as President of the chapter for the term 2010/11. Mr. Mohiuddeen is a Certified Safety Professional with 25 years of rich oil industry experience. He is presently working as Safety Engineer with HSE Systems Team of HSE Group, Kuwait Oil Company.

ASSE officials note that on-the-job fatality rates in the U.S. have been going down in recent years, yet fatalities are still occurring at workplaces, they note, ‘that don’t value safety, don’t look at risks and solutions, don’t turn to safety, health and environmental professionals for the needed input and guidance to help make their workplace a safe one’. ASSE officials note that during an economic downturn is not the time to cut safety and health programs. These cuts can only lead to a reduction in safety and an increase in health costs, turnover, production delays, customer dissatisfaction and more. NAOSH Week is just one of the tools ASSE members and partners use each year the first week of May to increase awareness of the importance of being safe at work and of the occupational safety, health and environmental profession.

ASSE, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), the Canadian Society of Safety Engineering (CSSE), and the more than 50 OSHA Alliance Partners (corporations and associations), reach hundreds of thousands of businesses and millions of people worldwide, with best practices and solutions on how to increase workplace safety during NAOSH Week.

Founded in 1911, the Des Plaines, IL-based ASSE is the oldest professional safety organization and is committed to protecting people, property and the environment. It has more than 32,000 occupational safety, health and environmental professional members located worldwide. ASSE Offers Valuable Tips for Students to Prevent On and Off Campus Fires

Des Plaines, IL (September 8, 2010) — In an effort to prevent injuries and illnesses in fires that occur in college residence halls, off-campus housing or fraternity/sorority houses and to raise awareness of life-saving fire prevention knowledge as students return to school, the American Society of Safety Engineers (ASSE) and the ASSE Fire Protection Practice Specialty (PS) are providing free fire prevention and safety tip sheets.

According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), U.S. fire departments responded to an estimated 3,570 structure fires in dormitories, fraternities, sororities, and barracks in 2003-2006. These fires caused an annual average of seven civilian deaths, 54 civilian fire injuries and $29.4 million in property damage. In August, 2010, a fire at a sorority house at Purdue University in West Lafayette, IN, caused more than 70 occupants to evacuate, injured one woman and caused over $50,000 in damage to the building.

“We want students to be able to finish their studies, not die or be injured in a preventable fire. Awareness about fire safety and prevention is critical to ensuring the safety and well-being of students living in on or off-campus housing,” said ASSE Fire Protection PS Administrator Walt Beattie, CSP, CFPS, CSHM. “Off-campus fires are the most common, but all students need to be aware of the dangers associated with fires and how to react in the event of an emergency. No one wants to lose a child, brother, sister or friend to a tragic fire.”

According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control (CDC) Fire Deaths and Injuries Fact Sheet, most victims of fires die from smoke or toxic gases, not from burns. Additionally, according to the USFA, smoke inhalation alone accounts for 40 percent of residential building fire injuries. Smoke inhalation occurs when one breathes in the products of combustion during a fire. Combustion results from the rapid breakdown of a substance by heat, burning. Smoke is a mixture of heated particles and gases.

To help reduce risk of injury and death, residence halls should be equipped with properly operating self-closing doors that are not propped open; clearly marked exits; corridors that are kept clear and are not blocked; heating and ventilation systems that are routinely inspected and repaired for any deficiencies; and properly operating fire alarm and extinguishing systems, where required.

A list of key resources and an on/off campus fire safety flyer. These are available at www.asse.org/newsroom/safetytips under on/off campus fire safety tips.

AMERICAN SOCIETY OF SAFETY ENGINEERS NOTE BUSINESS & INDUSTRY CAN SAVE SIGNIFICANT DOLLARS THROUGH EFFECTIVE ERGONOMIC PROGRAMS

DES PLAINES, IL (October 4, 2010)Workplace musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) are one of the most significant occupational safety and health problems in the U.S., according to the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). The American Society of Safety Engineers’ (ASSE) Ergonomics Branch is providing tips (see below)  to help reduce MSDs at work and at home as part of October’s National Ergonomics Month.

While a common cause of work MSDs is long or frequent exposure to awkward posture and forces to joints of the body when performing work tasks, the control is good ergonomic design of the workplace. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) describe occupational ergonomics as the science of designing workplace conditions and job demands to fit the capabilities of the working population.

“Musculoskeletal disorders continue to be a major problem for American workers. They’re real and they’re hurting a lot of people,” said Assistant Secretary of Labor for OSHA, Dr. David Michaels. “OSHA believes that putting the MSD column back on the work-related injuries and illnesses log will provide useful information that workers and employers can use to better identify MSDs and keep workers healthy and safe.”

The application of good ergonomic design of the workplace can improve productivity; help avoid illness and injury risks; and, lead to increased satisfaction among the workforce. The scope of ergonomics is very broad, but mainly refers to assessing work-related factors that may pose a risk of MSDs and recommendations to alleviate them. Examples of these risk factors are found in jobs requiring repetitive, forceful, or prolonged exertions of the hands; frequent heavy lifting, pushing, pulling, or carrying of heavy objects; and, prolonged awkward postures. Vibration and cold may add risk to these work conditions, according to OSHA. Reducing exposures to any one or all of these risk factors will help reduce the risk of injury to employees. in addition to these tips, it is key to train your employees in ergonomics to provide them with the skills, knowledge, abilities and tools aimed at reducing ergonomic injuries.”

The ASSE Ergonomics Branch’s free “Ergonomics Tip Sheet” for the workplace and home office is available at: http://www.asse.org/practicespecialties/ergonomics/ergo_tip_sheet.php.

http://www.asse.org/practicespecialties/ergonomics/docs/048_050_BPEG_1010Z.pdf
for a complimentary copy of the article “Ergonomics Investment” from the ASSE Professional Safety journal.

ASSE Ergonomic Branch member Cynthia L. Roth, CEO of ETC, said. “We urge employers now to develop and implement effective ergonomic systems to reduce those injuries such as back, arm, wrist and neck injuries usually caused by repetitive motion. An initial investment in effective ergonomic programs removes barriers to quality, productivity and human performance by fitting products, tasks, and environments to people, reduces the incidence of injuries and costs.”

ASSE Announces a New Initiative & Business Plan for Global Expansion Project

By Ashok Garlapati, CSP, QEP, G-IOSH - Asst. Administrator, ASSE International Practice Specialty

I recently participated in conference call facilitated by Mr.Jack Fearing, Administrator of IPS to discuss the recent ASSE initiative and Business Plan for Global Expansion. The Board of Directors of ASSE has approved the Global Expansion Project during recent Board meeting. During the conference call, the IPS Advisory Committee discussed various options to support this Business Plan. I am pleased to provide the brief objective of this Business Plan for the benefit of Kuwait Chapter members. Suggestions are invited in line with the Business Plan objectives.

Background on the ASSE Business Plan on Global Expansion Project:

Since the year 2005, ASSE, has conducted several initiatives for expanding the Society beyond the USA borders. Various Taskforces viz. International Membership Taskforce, Most of the World (MOW) Taskforce and Global Task Force have been constituted earlier. These Taskforce committees have given valuable recommendations to ASSE to expand its presence on a global level, for example, the introduction of International Membership fees structure. Many other recommendations are yet to be implemented and the COMRA (Council of Membership and Regional Affairs) had recently submitted its Business Plan on Global Expansion by considering all these recommendations.

Salient Features of the Global Expansion Project:

  1. Expand the global presence of the Society to meets its vision of being a global champion of the safety, health, and environmental professional, a global leader of the profession and a premier resource for those engaged in protecting people, property and the environment through the execution of a strategic plan involving all facets and resources of the Society.

  2. Execute a strategic plan that enhances the reputation of the Society as a global champion of the safety, health and environmental professional, a global leader of the profession and a premier resource for those engaged in protecting people, property and the environment. A secondary benefit will be the growth of membership.

Objectives of Global Expansion Project:

  • Provide expanded educational and networking opportunities to improve the professional proficiency of those engaged globally in protecting people, property and the environment.

  • Provide and increase informational resources to support the knowledge and professional efforts of those engaged globally in protecting people, property and the environment.

  • Provide new and improved products to meet the needs of professionals engaged globally in protecting, people, property and the environment.

  • Advance the reputation of the Society as global leader and resource center for the safety, health, environmental professional.

  • Increase Society membership through the expansion of our resources and opportunities to position ourselves as a trusted leader of the profession for people to join who are engaged globally in protecting people, property and environment.

The Kuwait Chapter contribution to this initiative:

I am pleased to inform you that Global Expansion Project is based on some of the success stories of existing international Chapters. In this regard, our Kuwait Chapter has taken the lead in supporting the globalization of ASSE through all international Taskforces. Our Chapter has also taken the lead in many other aspects in terms of highest the highest membership base outside USA, the first international SPY (Safety Professional Year) award belongs to our Chapter, the first international member to be entered into President Court from our Chapter. Other Kuwait Chapter contributions include the first international member to serve as an Assistant Administrator of a Practice Specialty (IPS), the President’s Award to an international member, the first member in the ASSE Diversity Committee belongs to our Chapter and the list goes on and on... Let’s continue with this illustrious history our Chapter is making within ASSE.

Let us take this opportunity to further support ASSE Global Expansion Project by proving value added suggestions. Please send your suggestions to ashokcpcl@yahoo.com with a cc to john_fearing@aon.com. Thank you in advance for your consideration and cooperation on this important ASSE Global Expansion initiative.

Technical Meet on Quantitative Risk Assessment: A Path of Perception Towards Perfection

Speaker: J. Ramesh Babu is a chemical engineer with post graduation qualification in Business Administration. He holds the diploma in industrial safety. He is an Associate of Insurance Institute of India and Associate of Institute of Risk Management, UK. He is a trained HAZOPer and certified QRA specialist. He is a TUV Certified functional safety engineer and Exida/ CFSE trained functional safety professional.

Synopsis of Meet

The quantitative assessment of risks posed by various facilities has been challenging in the recent times with changing technology and revised risk acceptance targets by standards and governments. Complex process conditions and environment conditions warrant use of correct methodology and the most realistic models to assess the consequences of hazards and the resultant risks. Constant efforts are taken by all those concerned to validate the models whenever the major incidents happen in the world. The terminologies and concepts used by the risk assessors have been found by the reader confusing and confronting with each other. It is essential for every individual in particular industrial professionals to understand the QRA concepts to appreciate the concern of all risk analysts and to support the organization and authorities in minimizing the risk levels. The presentation in question aims at discussing how the QRA which is a sound based perception handles the various complexities involved in the process and the effectiveness of the tool in the modern day context.
